South African-born Devon Conway smashes 99 for NZ against Aussies

South African-born Devon Conway made 99* to rescue New Zealand from 19/3 against Australia in Christchurch.
Conway, who moved from South Africa to New Zealand in 2017, became eligible to represent the Black Caps last year.
Conway has been a prolific run-scorer for the Wellington Firebirds in all formats.

Devon Conway's international foray with the Black Caps of New Zealand is proving to be very profitable for the South African after making an unbeaten 99* (59) against Australia in Christchurch.

The 29-year-old Conway, who left South Africa in 2017 after stints with the Lions and the Dolphins didn't quite have the desired returns, top scored for the Black Caps out of a total of 184/5 in the first of five T20s against their Tasman rivals.

The 99* was Conway's third 50 in seven T20 games, having made his debut against the West Indies in Auckland late last year. His 50 came off 36 balls with six fours and a six.

Conway, who has been a prolific run-scorer for the Wellington Firebirds across all formats, guided New Zealand to the defendable total after Daniel Sams and Jhye Richardson reduced the hosts to 19/3.

New Zealand lost key batsmen in Martin Guptill, Tim Seifert and Kane Williamson in what was an excellent start for the visitors, who won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Conway, who clobbered 10 fours and three sixes, had crucial partnerships with Glenn Phillips (74 off 51 balls), James Neesham (47 off 29 balls) and Mitchell Santner (44* off 20 balls) that ensured Australia, led by Aaron Finch, will have to stretch their legs to win the game.
